personal support worker (PSW)

Provides direct support and assistance on a one on one basis either in their homes or in an establishment such as nursing homes, hospitals and retirement homes

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Personal Support Worker certification from an accredited school or college.

  • Current First Aid and CPR Training

  • WHMIS and Health and Safety Training

  • Previous experience working with the elderly

  • Strong ability to cope with stressful situations

  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication

  • Current Vulnerable Sector Police Screening

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with daily living activities which include meal prep, feeding clients when necessary, turning and ambulating.

  • Assist clients with personal hygiene. Provide support with bedpans, baths, shampoos and showers.

  • Actively participate in and facilitate as needed activities of daily living as outlined in their plans

  • Provide other related care for clients, including ice packs, non-sterile dressing and therapeutic baths, ROM and other exercises as prescribed by their doctors and physiotherapists.

  • With the staff team use creativity and resourcefulness to ensure that the quality of life principles are effectively applied for the resident while maintaining the person’s dignity and respect. 

  • Check vital signs and record daily information in the patient’s chart.

  • Follow through with the client’s prescribed dietary needs.

  • Follow clients’ prescribed Transfer and Lift program.

  • When working in an establishment, assist the nurses and other staff as directed and needed.

  • Adhere to professional standards, follow policies and procedures.

COMMUNICATION

  • Communicate in positive and effective manner between your co-workers and other personnel to support and encourage an environment that is safe and productive to all residents, clients and co-workers.

  • Maintain the confidentiality of all information related to the place of work.

  • Complete written reports at the end of each shift regarding the resident’s condition, behavior, and incidents of concern, whereabouts and personal needs using communication book and residents information sheets.

  • Read and initial the Communication Books at the beginning of each shift and be aware of any changes.

  • Report any conflicts or concerns relating to the residents or co-workers to Management immediately.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Adhere to Health and Safety Policies and Procedures in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario.

  • Visually inspect equipment prior to using, report any concern to the supervisor.

  • Assist residents to maintain their rooms to ensure everyone’s safety.

  • Follow safe operating procedures when using any mechanical equipment.

  • Follow procedures for the reporting of all hazards, incidents, and/or accidents.

home support worker (HSW)

Home Support Workers provide personal care and companionship for seniors, persons with disabilities and convalescent clients. Care is provided within the client’s residence, in which the home support worker may also reside. They are employed by home care and support agencies, private households. Housekeepers perform housekeeping and other home management duties in private households and other non-institutional, residential settings.

MAIN DUTIES:

  • Provides care and companionship for individuals and families during periods of incapacitation, convalescence or family disruption

  • Administer bedside and personal care to clients such as aid in ambulation, bathing, personal hygiene, and dressing and undressing

  • Plan and prepare meals and special diets, grocery shopping and feed or assist in feeding clients

  • May perform routine health-related duties such as changing non-sterile dressings, assisting in the administration of medications and collecting specimens under the general direction of home care agency supervisor or nurse

  • Performs routine housekeeping duties such as laundry, washing dishes and making beds

  • Works as a supportive care worker for palliative care and hospice patients.

  • Checks and records vital signs

  • Assists, with range of motion exercise and other rehabilitative measures

  • Practices universal precautions and maintains a clean working environment

  • Maintains records; documents procedures

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Some secondary school education is required; home management experience may be required

  • College or other home support courses may be required

  • Current First Aid and CPR Training

  • Completion of a training program in care of the elderly, care of persons with disabilities, convalescent care or in a related field may be required

  • Current Vulnerable Sector Police Screening
